Planning Process

Our new plans for the Elizabeth House site are based on only a single tall building, which is of exceptional architectural quality, and a far more generous provision of open space and other benefits.

The basis of this design was presented by David Chipperfield Architects during a design competition in summer 2010.

The competition proposals were also presented to representatives of the local community, Lambeth Council, English Heritage, the South Bank Centre, the Greater London Authority and the South Bank Employers Group, with consultation continuing as the plans evolved throughout 2011.

Following an independent Design Review in February 2012, Design Council CABE said:

  • “Elizabeth House has the potential to be an exemplar in terms of visual impact and design quality for tall buildings in the area. We continue to support its volume and scale, which seem appropriate for the context, and we find the slender tower and the overall resolution to be successful. We applaud the design team for their work. We applaud the proposed landscape design the public space around the buildings and Waterloo station.”
